Many shopping centres have continued to remain open during the pandemic, providing vital access to essential retailers. We have seen this extend, in many cases, into support for local communities with donations and charitable actions, whilst digital messaging has also been used to support the swell of encouraging and informative messaging.
On 25th May, Boris Johnson set out a road map to ease the current lockdown restrictions as and when the time is right, with outdoor markets and showrooms opening as of today (1st June) and other non-essential retail offerings opening from the 15th. For our property partners, this has accelerated the process of re-opening the doors, with most centres now having finalised guidelines for a safe and sustainable return to business.
This includes all the centres in our portfolio, including Bullring, Bluewater, Meadowhall, intu Trafford Centre, intu Metrocentre, intu Lakeside, St David's and Manchester Arndale.
Sanitising stations will be introduced throughout
Increased and continual cleaning will be taking place
Controlled Footfall & Traffic Flow measures
Social distancing & organised queuing systems
With the ability to easily regulate footfall numbers, we expect centres to offer a clean and controlled sense of escapism for an audience who have been deprived of extensive social activities. Many research studies, including data from Kantar, have shown that shopping has remained one of the most desired activities for people after the lockdown restrictions are lifted.
Increased and continual cleaning services and sterilising stations are being planned to add a level of consumer confidence whilst social distancing guidelines and traffic flow systems will ensure a safe and seamless experience.
Whilst footfalls will be reduced, we expect dwell times to be a lot higher. We have seen just this week that as Australia’s lockdown restrictions ease, a Shopper Media study has revealed that Australian shoppers are now experiencing longer wait times due to social distancing regulations and newly introduced queuing systems.
We believe that this will, in the short-term at the very least, generate new value for advertising messaging by adding further context and relevance to an already actively consumed medium.
In the meantime, we are carefully planning our approach for a return to market that should provide some exciting and innovative opportunities for our clients as well as new channels for collecting and evaluating consumer insights.
We will continue to carefully examine the fluid state of play within our environment and provide updates when we can.
